The wines of this DO are produced in Catalonia, in the North West of the Iberian Peninsula. The DO Catalunya covers about 60.000 hectares of ground surface, divided up into more than 300 municipalities. The ground is predominately calcareous and poor in organic material. The climate is Mediterranean.
Wine production in Catalonia began more than 2.000 years ago with the arrival of the Romans. Since that time, wine has become a symbol of Catalan tradition.
